37th Annual NRL Workshop on Infectious Disease Testing and International Summit a Success as our First Virtual Only Workshop

On October 11-13, the 37th NRL Workshop on Infectious Disease Testing was held in association with the NRL Asian/International Summit as a virtual meeting. Dr Pip Hetzel (Director, NRL) opened the conference with plenary lectures from Prof Ben Cowie, Michelle Francis and speakers from SANQUIN in The Netherlands.

The high quality of our many and varied speakers from Australia and around the world is testimony to the global reach and reputation of NRL in the field of quality in infectious disease testing in serology, DNA and point of care.  Over 250 delegates attended from across South East Asia as well as Australia. While COVID-19 was a dominant theme, we ensured a full and varied program covering point of care testing and regulation, blood safety and infectious diseases in our environment. A highlight was a moving documentary which was filmed specifically for the Workshop, presenting the challenges and human cost of the global scale up in healthcare pathology in the early days of the pandemic.  Our sincere thanks to NRL's Wayne Dimech in preparing this documentary and the thoughtful contributions from colleagues across NRL’s global contact network.

This was our first live-streamed event as we were forced to pivot to virtual only due to the COVID related restrictions in Melbourne. Always planned as a hybrid conference, the end result, with near faultless delivery of the content online, was a huge success.

We thank our sponsors for their support and our speakers for the significant contribution they have made to scientific education and professional development of our global community working to address infectious diseases.
