NRL Training: Test Kit Evaluations Training Workshop Delivered in Myanmar
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is working with the Governments of Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Myanmar and Viet Nam to enhance responses to emerging infectious diseases and the management of other major public health threats. The Greater Mekong Subregion Health Security Project aims to improve these countries’ health systems whilst promoting cross-country cooperation to improve national and international health security.
As one of the implementation activities of the ADB Greater Mekong Subregion Health Security Project, NRL was asked to provide technical training on test kit evaluations to the National Health Laboratory (NHL) in Yangon. NHL’s objective included positioning itself as the National Test Kit Evaluations Centre for Myanmar and developing a well-organised sample bank within NHL.
From 8-15 August 2019, NRL staff member Susie Braniff delivered a six day training program to 37 NHL staff with the aim to:
Train NHL staff on test kit evaluations for microbiology, serology and pathology
Assist NHL staff in understanding the methodology for performing systematic and standardized evaluations and analysis
Provide feedback and support on assignments submitted by participants as post-training follow-up
Provide technical support to NHL and other relevant stakeholders for the development of a well-organised sample bank within NHL
The six day program consisted of theoretical and practical training where days one and six focused on the managerial aspects of operating a national evaluations program, day two focused on the theory training for laboratory performance evaluation testing and days three, four and five incorporated laboratory-based technical training for the different divisions.
At the conclusion of the Workshop participants demonstrated an increased understanding of the test kit evaluation process and the importance of maintaining a repository of well characterised specimens in a sample bank.
