January 2016: NRL attends the 1st Assembly of the Regional Network in HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine
The 1st Assembly of the Regional Network in HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine held in Bangkok from 15-17 January was attended by Wayne Dimech and Susie Braniff. Holding a Regional Network assembly has been a long pursued goal of the Australian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM) as a way to foster links between clinical societies operating in the Asian and Pacific regions.
The two day meeting, jointly hosted by HIVNAT and the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University brought together participants representing 42 different organisations from 16 countries in the ASHM Regional Network. Discussions focussed on information sharing, best practices, approaches to task shifting, collaboration opportunities and the funding landscape for sexual health initiatives. Workshop sessions encouraged the exploration of professional standards, research strategies, the development of clinical capacity and the role of laboratory in building a robust response to blood borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections. NRL is currently following up a number of leads relating to laboratory strengthening activities identified during the assembly and look forward to the continued collaboration with members of the ASHM Regional Network.
