    Organisational Context

    The National Reference Laboratory (NRL) operates as a division of St Vincent’s Institute whose mission is to create and harness knowledge of disease in order to improve health outcomes for those in need. NRL was established as part of the Australian Government’s HIV and AIDS strategy and is a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre working to promote and improve the quality of tests and testing for infectious diseases globally. NRL provides unique and specialised services, including pre- and post-market evaluations of serology test kits, quality assurance programmes, specialised testing services, consultation, education and training for laboratories in Australia and worldwide. In addition, NRL manages the SVI Biobank which processes and stores samples on behalf of clinical researchers across the St Vincent’s Hospital campus.


    The role

    NRL is currently seeking a full time Laboratory Technician to provide support to NRL’s Laboratory Operations including specimen reception, laboratory testing, and to assist the Biobank Co-ordinator in a range of activities including processing of specimens for Biobank and corresponding data management.

    Your specimen reception and testing responsibilities include, but not limited to:

    • Preparation and testing of samples for analysis
    • Reporting results within the testing turnaround times
    • Quality control- adhere to all quality control requirements
    • Safety- adhere to all laboratory safety requirements
    • Maintenance-perform regular maintenance on equipment and general laboratory housekeeping duties
    • Documentation- completed accurately and timely manner

    Your Biobank responsibilities include:

    • specimen preparation (centrifugation/aliquoting),
    • cryopreservation,
    • entering data into OpenSpecimen,
    • ordering of consumables,
    • management of documentation.

    The incumbent will also be expected undertake general laboratory tasks and to provide general support to NRL laboratory functions.

    Who we are seeking:

    Our ideal candidate will have a certificate or diploma in laboratory technology or equivalent with relevant laboratory experience. This position is suitable for an organized individual with advanced analytical and problem-solving skills who prides themselves on a high level of accuracy in their work.


    It is desirable but not essential that the applicant has the following experience:

    • Understanding of quality control protocols and NATA requirements
    • Experience in the subject of Serology and standard Molecular testing techniques
    • Experience in receiving and processing of laboratory specimens
    • Experience in maintenance of laboratory equipment
    • Experience in using laboratory information management systems or relevant computer skills

    To be considered you shall be required to provide evidence you have permanent working rights in Australia or hold a relevant working visa to work full-time hours, as well as being fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

    Salary: commensurate with qualifications and experience, ranging from $58,000 – $60,830 per annum, plus:

    • $15,900 FBT exempt salary packaging and
    • 10.5% superannuation.
