July 2016: Myanmar Project
Between 25 and 29 July 2016, NRL conducted its third visit to Myanmar under the sub-contract with the Foundation of Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), to strengthen the laboratory system in Myanmar through training and quality management system implementation. During the visit, NRL (represented by Marlene Tschaepe and Susie Braniff) conducted a series of training workshops in Mandalay and Yangon that included:
i) Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS) - This workshop followed on from Workshop II in June 2016, and was attended by laboratory staff from the National Health Laboratory (NHL); Public Health Laboratory, Mandalay (MPHL); Mingalardon HIV Specialist Hospital and the Mandalay General Hospital. The trainees were given an opportunity to present their findings regarding the implementation of two quality indicators to monitor laboratory processes, as well as additional work in Continual Improvement concepts (PDCA cycle; corrective and preventive action; internal audits). The trainees will have the opportunity to perform an internal audit of one of their laboratory processes in the next workshop in September.
ii) HIV Rapid Testing for Point-of-Care (POC) Test Sites - This workshop followed on from the site visits in June 2016, whereby NRL visited township hospital laboratories and community based POC sites for HIV testing in the Yangon and Mandalay regions. The workshop was attended by laboratory staff and midwives from Madayar Township; Sint Khine Township; North Dagon Township; Thanlyin Township; staff from the National AIDS Program (NAP) STD Control Teams; MPHL and NHL. The training workshop was split into theory and practical training for HIV rapid testing, and included a competency assessment using HIV Serology EQAS panels prepared by NHL. NRL would like to thank all the stakeholder representatives, laboratory staff and workshop trainees for their cooperation and participation during the workshop activities conducted by NRL during this visit.
