The SVI Biobank and the power of biological sample donation.

Every year during National Blood Donor Week, Australia celebrates the people who give blood. But at the SVI Biobank, we know that the act of donation extends beyond merely blood banks.

Blood samples donated to the Biobank by generous individuals are separated into multiple different components: Plasma, Serum, PBMC, Whole blood. Each sample is stored in our freezers for a different scientific research purpose.

This National Blood Donor Week, we want to shine a light on the broader community of biological sample donors whose contributions make ground-breaking research possible.

More from Our Biobank Team

  • The Unsung Heroes of Medical Research

When a person donates a biological sample for research, they rarely see the outcome.  Yet their samples are vital for scientific advances, helping to confirm hypotheses, and working towards the development of new treatments. At the SVI Biobank, we hold over 50,000 specimens from more than 1,800 participants – samples spanning Type 1 Diabetes; breast, endocrine, and blood cancers, hepatitis and more. Each one represents a person who chose to contribute something of themselves to the pursuit of better medicine.

Those donors support primary and translational research studies conducted across Australia. Without them, that work simply doesn’t happen.

What Happens to a Donated Sample?

When a biological sample arrives at the SVI Biobank, it begins a carefully managed journey.

It is received, logged, and assessed. It is processed – centrifuged, aliquoted, and prepared to precise specifications. It undergoes quality checks to confirm integrity and viability. Then it is stored under 24/7 temperature-monitored conditions, ready for the day a researcher needs it.

When that day comes, an application is reviewed, ethics approvals are confirmed, and the sample is carefully dispatched – its chain of custody complete from the moment of donation.

    World-Class Standards for Every Sample

In 2025, the SVI Biobank achieved ISO 20387 accreditation through NATA – the international benchmark for biobanking quality. We are one of only two biobanks in Australia to hold this accreditation.

It means every sample in our collection is managed under verified methods, to rigorous quality standards, and with full traceability. For researchers, it provides confidence in the integrity of the sample. For donors, it means their contribution is in the best hands.

    The People Behind Every Discovery

To every person who has donated a sample to research – whether through a clinical trial, a research study, or a direct contribution to the SVI Biobank – thank you.

Your generosity doesn’t always make headlines. But it makes breakthroughs possible.
